Time is Valuable – Spend it Well
If you had a handful of crisps notes, would you rip them in half and throw them away? I doubt it, it wouldn’t be a smart move. And yet we do this with our time every day!
We often don’t manage our time well for 3 main reasons:
- Human nature
- Lack of understanding of time management
- Ineffective tools
However, if we can learn to manage it well there are major benefits for both ourselves and our organisations:
- Achieve more goals
- Have a better work / life balance
- Lower stress levels
- Higher motivation
- Improved teamwork
- Less absenteeism
- Higher staff retention
One thing we need to do is get away from the working “long hours” cultures and working long doesn’t mean you are working effectively.
Research has shown the fastest growing companies are more likely to work 35-hour weeks or less. Declining companies often work 70-hour weeks or more.
So, our aim should be t work smarter and not longer.
Its about doing the right things at the right time. Doing the right things is much easier than doing things at the right time.
We can help ourselves by:
- Setting goals (short/medium/long term)
- Prioritising tasks re urgency and importance
- Planning
- Doing high pay off tasks, rather than task we “like”
- Reviewing out current time management practices and see how we are using our time
- Delegating more
- Being mindful of our stress
Remember changing our time management habits is not something we can do overnight. Small changes to improve our time management incrementally is the best way as we are more likely to stick with it and continue improving.
